Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival
At the intersection of harmony, humanity, and nature, the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival gathers internationally-recognized artists and inquisitive audiences to celebrate the life and joy of great music. We like to say “Bach is just the beginning” to share our deep appreciation of the breadth of work influenced by the musical inventions of Bach.
Nestled in beautiful Harrisonburg, VA on Indigenous Siouan, Algonquian and Haudenosaunee land in the Shenandoah Valley, our annual week-long summer festival presents vibrant performances on the Eastern Mennonite University campus and downtown by local artists, the Shenandoah Valley Chamber Orchestra, Baroque Academy Faculty, and Festival Choir. Listeners can attend large and small performances of orchestra and chamber music, family and kids events, poetry readings, music talks, and immersive musical experiences in our parks and nature preserves.

GLASS Modern Love Waltz
GÓRECKI Requiem for a Polka
Are you ready to be hypnotized by the Maximus Minimalists? Join us for a powerful exploration of the giants of the minimalist movement. But don’t be misled: minimalism does not mean boring and contentless. Composer Arvo Pärt’s Fratres encapsulates his observation that ‘the instant and eternity are struggling within us.’ John Adams’s Son of Chamber Symphony and Phillip Glass’s Modern Love Waltz both explore the stylings of America’s popular modern composers. And Henryk Górecki’s Kleines Requiem für eine Polka is filled with contradictions and ironies. Come see why simple isn’t really simple but rather, so much more!

Washington Master Chorale
We conclude our 10th season with a landmark event, the world premiere of The Unknown Sea, by renowned composer David Conte. Composed for mezzo soloist, SATB chorus, piano and chamber orchestra, the piece is based on the texts of preeminent American poet Elizabeth Bishop. Bishop is one of the most celebrated poets of the 20th Century. A “poet’s poet,” she was the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a position now known as the nation’s Poet Laureate), a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, and a gifted teacher. Conte will attend the premiere and participate in a pre-concert conversation led by former Poet Laureate of California, Dana Gioia. Gioia was both a student of Bishop and the moderator at the Chorale’s inaugural concert in February 2010. The Unknown Sea will be paired with Ralph Vaughan Williams’s masterful cantata, Dona Nobis Pacem based on Walt Whitman’s poems and texts from the Bible, and re-orchestrated by British composer and conductor Jonathan Rathbone. The pre-concert event will be free and open to the public and will begin at 4:00pm. Photo credit: Library of Congress.
