Every oboist is different. I believe it is important to get to know each student on a personal level. Afterall, it is my job to offer deep criticism with the goal of musical growth, and it is much easier to 'dig deep' when your teacher is someone you trust. While my students tend to be the best in the area, we strive very hard to behave like an ethically-minded family, and not allow the competitive nature of what we do to distract us from creating great art. My teaching style is intense and direct, balanced with a nurturing atmosphere, positivity, and humor.

Private Studio Policies

Statement of Intent

My goal is to have the best possible oboe studio in the DMV. I want my students to develop their sense of self, and expression of passion, through music. It is also my hope that any student within my studio plays at a level that makes them competitive for collegiate music programs, should they wish to continue their musical studies. Studying music is a privilege that, in order to do it well, requires the student to find the tricky balance between discipline and joy, control and expression. Mastering this helps all.

Student Expectations

I accept students who hold their musical studies as a priority over all other extra curricular activities. This is “Varsity Oboe.” While it is not necessary for my students to pursue a degree in music in college, my students are expected to audition for district and regional ensembles, maintain a healthy presence in their school’s music program, participate in Solo&Ensemble, and attend professional music performances in the area. Students should maintain a rigorous practice routine that I will help them develop.

Attendance

During the school year, regular, weekly lessons are mandatory. The exceptions include major illness, school holidays, inclement weather, and family travel arrangements made with notice. Cancellations made within less than 24 hours notice will be billed. For summer lessons (June to August) students are expected to make a minimum of 6 lessons in order to maintain their studio spot in the following year. While not required, I love flattery, and hope to see my students at one of my performances each season.

Reeds

Reeds are an oboists best friend and constant battle. While at times frustrating, it is hard to explain how much pride and joy an oboist feels when they produce a beautiful sound knowing they are entirely responsible for that product.

I sell reeds within my studio only. If a student starts with me in 5th or 6th grade, the requisite to continue with me in high school is they must learn to make reeds the summer after 8th grade. For older transfer students, the timeline will be tailored, but expect to be making reeds within 2 years. Don’t worry. I help you every step of the way!

Participation

Mock Auditions: I hold screened/recorded mock auditions for district, regional, and state audition preparation. Eligible students are expected to attend.

Solo & Ensemble: All students above 7th grade are expected to participate in this opportunity. I am also happy to coach chamber ensembles.

Youth Orchestras: We are lucky to live in such a culturally rich area with so many opportunities for young musicians. The oboe is a highly sought after instrument for these groups, and I am happy to help you find the right home.

Studio Recital: Typically held in June, all students should expect to perform in some capacity.
